Committees and Workgroups - Statement of Ethics
Kansas Association of School Administrators (KASA) is comprised of superintendents, assistant superintendents, chief administrators working directly with a governing board, and chief administrative officers and staff members of colleges and universities.
The Kansas Association of School Administrators is constituted to serve the growth, development and general encouragement of the Kansas system of education…[KASA] provides the opportunity for professional growth, service and sharing…The membership of this association believes that this organization will help achieve the broad educational goals for the students in Kansas schools”
These words from the Preamble to the Constitution of KASA have served us well. However, times have changed. The intense environment created by the pressure of No Child Left Behind, amplified by the impact of a downward spiral of the economy and questionable willingness of the state legislature to adequately and equitably fund education, has intensified the need for the KASA reorganization.
Research proves that district leadership matters. Superintendents, who are charged with providing an excellent and equitable education for each and every student in their district, are called to use their positional power and skill to rally revenues and resources to provide the support needed to accelerate their students toward success. The students of Kansas public schools are dependent upon the expertise of their superintendent to communicate and advocate for their needs. The reorganization of KASA will help position the organization to be a strong voice for public education in Kansas, and to be the voice for all 465,000 students in our public schools.
One of the outcomes of the reorganization of KASA will be the ability to provide a strong enhanced professional development program for our membership. This professional development program will provide members with training in legislative advocacy in order to influence policy change. In addition, KASA will focus on enhancing the leadership skills of our members – and building leadership capacity among all district leaders. A third goal for the professional development program is for members to learn how to be the voice of public education, communicating with the public and building strong bonds within the organization and across the state. Through KASA action in legislative advocacy and other activities, we intend to be a unified force for promoting and equitable for Kansas children.
The 465,000 students of Kansas public schools are waiting for someone to give voice to their needs. If not KASA, whom? If not now, when?
